FIFA World Cup tickets witness huge demand, soaring prices

At the club level, Abdou achieved two Mauritanian league championships with FC Nouadhibou before most recently serving in Morocco’s premier division with Hassania Agadir.

Recognized for his ability to construct solid defensive formations and promote team cohesion, Abdou now takes on the role of leading a Burkina Faso team that combines seasoned internationals with rising talents.

His methodology — grounded in organization, unity, and tactical precision — is anticipated to serve as the foundation of the federation’s revitalization plan.

Burkina Faso’s credentials on the continental stage remain noteworthy.

The Stallions reached the AFCON final in 2013 and progressed to the semi-finals in both 2017 and 2021.

However, recent fluctuations, culminating in their early departure from the last tournament, have heightened the call for stability and ongoing competitiveness.

Abdou’s initial matches are set for the March 2026 international window, although the opponents have yet to be determined. With World Cup qualifiers approaching and preparations for upcoming continental competitions already in motion, the timeline for making an impact is urgent.

For the federation, this appointment signifies a commitment to experience and established continental leadership.

For Abdou, it presents the chance to steer a nation with a rich history towards renewed aspirations for success.

Approximately two million tickets were sold during an initial lottery in October. A subsequent sales phase in December and January also operated as a lottery and drew a record 508 million requests, as reported by FIFA.

While FIFA has not disclosed the number of tickets allocated, the matches that generated the highest interest included the Group K finale between Colombia and Portugal in Miami on June 27, co-hosts Mexico against South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18, and the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.

– Ticket prices have surged....-

A total of 104 matches will be held at this expanded World Cup, which is the first to include 48 teams, and ticket prices have surged for the most sought-after games. The fan organization Football Supporters Europe indicated that the North American bid had initially assured that tickets would be available starting at $21; however, the lowest-priced tickets that have been released are now $60, such as for the Group J opener between Austria and Jordan at Levi’s Stadium in California.

Most tickets are priced at a minimum of $200 for matches featuring prominent nations, while the least expensive tickets for the final are priced at $2,000, with premium seats costing $8,680. This does not include FIFA’s official resale platform, where a category three seat for the match at MetLife Stadium on July 19 was listed for an astonishing $143,750, which is over 41 times its original price of $3,450.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino maintains that ticket prices are merely a reflection of the significant demand. He stated, "In the US in particular, there is this concept known as dynamic pricing, meaning that prices will fluctuate based on the specific match."

In response to ongoing criticism regarding ticket prices, FIFA introduced a more affordable category of tickets; however, the $60 seats are exclusively reserved for fans of the qualified teams and will constitute only 10 percent of each national federation’s allocation.

Additionally, FIFA has made available packages that combine match tickets with access to VIP lounges. For the match between France and Senegal in New Jersey on June 16, these packages range from $2,900 to $4,500.

– …And prices continue to rise –

FIFA is reserving an undisclosed number of tickets that will be released from April until the conclusion of the tournament on a “first come, first served” basis.

Moreover, there are resale platforms, including FIFA’s official site. However, this contentious fan-to-fan market permits resellers to set their own prices, which explains the exorbitant price listed for a final ticket.
