Lagos seals public toilet, property over wastewater pollution
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has closed a public toilet located at Ijora Olopa and a property in Coker-Aguda, Surulere, due to environmental pollution and the improper discharge of wastewater.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency indicated that the public toilet at Ijora Olopa, near Nipost, was shut down on February 24, 2026, for the "intentional discharge of raw sewage and wastewater into the environment using a pumping machine," an action deemed to be a "public nuisance, environmental pollution, and a threat to human health."
The office stated that this enforcement action is part of its responsibility to protect public health and prevent environmental degradation throughout the state.
Additionally, the agency has also closed a property situated at 22b Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Coker Market Road, Coker-Aguda, Surulere, following reports of the "ongoing discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment." The statement noted that the allegation was investigated and validated by the agency as "posing significant health and environmental risks."
The LSWMO cautioned that breaches of wastewater regulations will not be tolerated, emphasizing that "any act of environmental nuisance will incur appropriate penalties and potential prosecution" in accordance with state laws.
Furthermore, it urged residents to "implement proper wastewater management and hygiene practices to enhance public health and foster environmental sustainability," highlighting that adherence is essential to avert preventable health hazards.
The agency encouraged the public to report violations through its official contact numbers — 08022022397 and 07025332163 — or through its social media channels.
