Don urges inclusion of safe motoring education into school curriculum
Professor Anthony Oyenuga, Dean of the College of Vocational and Technology Education, Tai Solarin University of Education, has called for the integration of road signals and safe motoring education into the curricula of both secondary and tertiary institutions across Nigeria to stem the ugly tide of carnage on our highways.
Oyenuga made this appeal in a statement on Monday while giving the university's 33rd inaugural lecture, "The Vehicle: An Enemy In Camouflage."
"A culture of responsible motoring among Nigerians will be fostered by early education on safe driving techniques," he stated.
It is also instructive to add that we need to intentionally instill a culture of safety in our children by incorporating safe driving into the curriculum at all educational levels, from secondary school to university.
The university speaker also emphasized the dual roles that cars play, pointing out that although they have beneficial uses, they also contribute to emissions, pollution, and accidents that have a negative impact on the environment and human health.
Oyenuga called on automakers to improve safety by adding sensors that can automatically stop cars when an accident is within a kilometer or less.
In order to keep cars from turning into "enemy in camouflage," he also emphasized the significance of routine auto maintenance, careful trip planning, rigorous adherence to traffic laws and road signals, speed control, and avoiding aggressive driving.
Oyenuga also urged all tiers of government to step up public awareness initiatives to inform people about the dangers of automobile abuse and encourage responsible behaviour and sustainable transportation choices.
In addition to congratulating Professor Oyenuga on his academic success, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Oluwole Banjo emphasized the significance of regular vehicle maintenance to guarantee ongoing functionality.
In order to lessen and possibly completely eliminate traffic accidents, Banjo promoted rigorous adherence to traffic signs, signals, and markings.
As a result of his commitment and diligence, Oyenuga is acknowledged as the first Professor of Industrial Technical Education at TASUED, Ogun State, and in Ijebu area. He is also the third in all of South Western Nigeria.
