Truck kills LASTMA officer, two riders in Badagry
A truck loaded with cement lost control on Monday, resulting in the deaths of a traffic officer and two motorcyclists at the Badagry Roundabout in Lagos.
The deceased included an official from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority who was on duty, as well as two commercial motorcyclists who were waiting for passengers around 9:45 a.m.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck unexpectedly veered off course while approaching the busy intersection, crashing into the victims and causing distress within the community.
"The truck struck the LASTMA officer on duty and two motorcyclists waiting to pick up passengers," stated a representative from the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps.
He further remarked, "The driver attempted to steer the vehicle to minimize casualties; otherwise, many more motorcyclists and vehicles could have been involved."
Mr. Yusuf Sanni, Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident and noted that the driver had been apprehended.
"The driver has been taken to Badagry Police Station," Sanni mentioned, attributing the accident to loss of control and advising motorists to steer clear of the area.
He also revealed that the bodies of the victims were taken to the hospital mortuary, while the truck was seized and taken to the police station.
CSP Folajimi Agosile, Divisional Police Officer at Badagry Police Station, verified the driver's detention pending legal proceedings.
"He will be brought before the Chief Magistrates’ Court once the investigations are completed," Agosile indicated.
Officials from the FRSC, LASTMA, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Nigeria Police Force were observed clearing the expressway and restoring order following the tragic event.
