Aisha Yesufu decries FCT teachers’ strike, urges Wike’s intervention
On Monday, April 20, 2026, activist Aisha Yesufu publicly called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to intervene in the indefinite strike launched by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing.
The strike officially began today, coinciding with the scheduled resumption of public primary and secondary schools for the new academic term.
Key Points of the SituationThe Cause: The NUT is protesting the non-implementation of a committee report submitted in August 2025. This committee was originally set up by Minister Wike in July 2025 to harmonize teachers' entitlements and find permanent solutions to recurring industrial disputes.
Teacher Demands: * Immediate release and implementation of the 2025 committee report.
Removal of "vacancy" as a precondition for the promotion of classroom teachers.
A review of previous promotion exercises to ensure eligible teachers are not hindered by bureaucracy.
Aisha Yesufu’s Intervention: In a statement shared on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, Yesufu described the strike as a "preventable crisis." She emphasized that teachers are being "pushed to the wall" and warned that the ultimate victims are the children whose education is being disrupted.
Current Status of SchoolsThe NUT has directed all public school teachers across the six area councils of the FCT to stay away from classrooms. Parents have been advised to keep their children at home until the union's demands are met. While the union acknowledged and appreciated the Minister’s recent approval of the N70,000 minimum wage and the payment of nine months of salary arrears, they maintain that the core structural issues regarding promotions and long-term entitlements remain unaddressed.
