Police to probe extortion allegations at Enugu checkpoints
The Enugu State Police Command has officially launched an investigation into fresh allegations of extortion involving security personnel at various checkpoints across the state. This move follows a series of viral social media reports and direct complaints from motorists and residents this week.
Here is the breakdown of the current situation:
1. The Nsukka "Under Siege" Report
The latest probe was triggered by a viral complaint on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as DJ SpoiltKid. The report alleged a high concentration of "uniformed extortionists" along the Odenigbo to Ogrute route.
The Allegation: Commuters, particularly tricycle (Keke) and motorcycle operators, are reportedly being forced to "settle" at up to three police and two army checkpoints on a single short trip.
Impact: Complainants highlighted that these illegal payments are further crippling low-income earners already struggling with high fuel prices.
2. Official Police Response
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ndukwe, responded publicly to the allegations on April 13, 2026.
Immediate Escalation: Ndukwe assured the public that the Command has "zero tolerance" for such behavior and that the matter has been escalated for immediate action.
Request for Evidence: The police have asked the public to provide unblurred photos or videos of officers caught in the act to aid in identifying and disciplining the specific personnel involved.
3. Recent "Kidnap and Extort" Incident
This probe follows another high-profile case just days ago where officers from the Awkunanaw Divisional Police Headquarters (Garriki) were accused of "kidnapping" a traveler and extorting N1 million via a PoS machine.
The Outcome: Following a social media outcry, the police authorities intervened, and the N1 million was successfully recovered and returned to the victim.
Disciplinary Action: The PPRO confirmed that returning the money was "not enough" and that the officers involved are currently undergoing an orderly room trial to face further sanctions.
4. Broader National Context
The crackdown in Enugu coincides with a firm directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, issued earlier this week. The IGP warned State Commissioners that they will be held personally accountable for extortion occurring within their commands.
Public Tip: If you encounter extortion in Enugu, the Command encourages residents to report incidents immediately to the PPRO's office or use the official police complaint channels, providing specific details like the time, location, and officer’s name tag if visible.
