Plastic pollution: Alternative Bank extends campaign to Abuja, Kano

The Alternative Bank has broadened its initiative focused on combating plastic pollution to include Abuja and Kano.

In a statement released on Sunday, the bank indicated that this initiative seeks to motivate collective action in two of Nigeria’s largest cities, where the increasing plastic waste poses risks to health, livelihoods, and the environment.

Plastic pollution represents one of Nigeria’s most urgent urban issues, and following the success of its Walk4ZeroPlastic event in Lagos, the Abuja event occurred on Saturday, while the Kano event is scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 2025, providing residents with the chance to contribute to a cleaner environment. Both events will feature symbolic walks and clean-up efforts in significant markets.

“Plastic pollution is suffocating our cities, but together, we can reverse this trend,” stated Garba Mohammed, Executive Director (North) at The Alternative Bank. “Abuja and Kano are prepared to demonstrate that collective action can lead to cleaner, safer, and more sustainable markets and streets in Nigeria.

We are calling upon every Nigerian, from market vendors to governmental bodies, to assume responsibility.

The Lagos launch of Walk4ZeroPlastic engaged over 300 participants, which included volunteers, market leaders, and government representatives, and received commendation from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources for its exemplary role in promoting environmental sustainability.

The extensions in Abuja and Kano are being executed in partnership with key collaborators such as the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Business Day Foundation, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, the Daar Communication Group, and the Kano State Ministry of Environment. Additionally, the walk is backed by the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board, Sterling One Foundation, Made by Nigeria, Kidney Care Hospital, the Sterling Sustainability Working Group, and The Alternative Foodbank.

The Walk4ZeroPlastic initiative embodies AltBank’s dedication to environmental sustainability by raising awareness about the severe consequences of plastic waste, promoting responsible waste management, and fostering enduring changes in behavior.
