N30,000 car racing bet leaves five dead in Ogun

Tragedy occurred in the Ipara region of Remo, Ogun State, when a car race wager of N30,000 led to an accident that resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including three suspected Yahoo boys and two local residents.

On Tuesday, a source from the community, who requested to remain anonymous, reported that the accident took place around 2 p.m. on Monday.

The source indicated that the suspected Yahoo boys had arranged a car racing event with a N30,000 prize for the winner.

It was noted by the source that during the race, one participant lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a nearby shop, instantly killing two bystanders.

The source further revealed that the driver, along with two other passengers in the car, became trapped and suffered various injuries before being rescued and transported to different hospitals.

The source stated, “The accident occurred yesterday (Monday) afternoon. What I learned was that some individuals suspected to be Yahoo boys organized a car racing event with a N30,000 wager.

“One of the cars lost control and crashed into a shop, resulting in the immediate deaths of two individuals, while the vehicle's occupants sustained various injuries before being rescued by emergency services.”

In addition, several videos of the incident reviewed by our correspondent depicted victims lying lifeless on the ground.

Another video captured the damaged structure that the car collided with, along with the occupants of the vehicle trapped inside.

The sounds of mourners lamenting the loss of life were also audible in the videos, some of which are currently being shared on social media platforms.

Confirming the incident, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, stated that the driver of the vehicle died at the scene, while two other passengers suffered various injuries and were taken to different hospitals.

Akinbiyi, during a phone call with our correspondent on Tuesday, revealed that the victims passed away at various hospitals to which they were transported.

He mentioned that the driver of the vehicle also succumbed to his injuries at the accident site.

Akinbiyi stated, "At approximately 13:40 hrs on 11/08/2025, a single fatal accident took place near the Owolowo area in Ipara Remo. The incident involved an unregistered Lexus vehicle, the driver's identity remains unknown, along with two other male passengers in the car.

“The accident occurred when the driver was heading outwards Fidiwo, but on getting to the aforementioned point, while at high speed, lost control of his vehicle and rammed into one Akeem Ashiru, male, and one Shina Badejo, by the roadside.

“As a result of the impact, the driver, Akeem Ashiru, and Shina Badejo died at the scene.”

He continued that the two other occupants died at the various hospitals where they were receiving treatment.

“Two other occupants were rescued to the Isara State Hospital, while one also died while receiving treatment.

“The other one was referred to OASTH Sagamu, where he also succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday,” Akinbiyi concluded.

On Tuesday, an accident occurred that resulted in the death of a man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, after he was crushed by a moving Volvo truck following a fall from a motorcycle in the Rounder area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Akinbiyi informed our correspondent that according to an eyewitness account, the man, who was riding as a passenger on the motorcycle, fell off while it was in motion, and subsequently, the Volvo truck approaching from behind collided with him, resulting in fatal injuries to his head.
