Female driver cries out after assault by Lagos ‘Agbero’
A female commercial driver in Lagos has expressed her distress after being violently assaulted by a thug known as an 'Agbero' while attempting to thwart the theft of her car battery.
The incident took place near the Oriental Hotel, where the assailant entered her vehicle under the guise of a passenger en route to the Nigerian Law School.
The driver grew suspicious upon noticing the suspect trying to remove her car battery through the rearview mirror.
When she confronted him, he responded with aggression, physically assaulting her, ripping her clothing, and dragging her through the streets.
As a result of the attack, her face was left swollen, and she was captured in a widely circulated video, visibly upset and calling for justice and assistance.
The victim has called for accountability and action against the ongoing harassment that female commercial drivers in Lagos endure.
In the video, she primarily spoke in Yoruba, stating, “He began to hit me when I inquired about the location of my battery,” as she wept.
“Look at my face, look at what he did to me. He tore my clothes and battered me. Please, anyone watching this video, help me. Call human rights. Is this how a woman trying to survive should be treated?
“This man must be brought to justice. Let him be an example. I won’t leave him until I get justice. I’m doing a daily job just to survive. Is being a female commercial driver in Lagos a crime?”
